Oronasal fistulas occur in the upper jaw in dogs and cats and are often a result of improper gum closure following tooth extraction. They can also occur from trauma like sticks, gunshots or other injuries. This patient has an ONF due to improper closure of the gum over a canine and two premolar teeth. The arrow points to the nasal tissue that can be seen through the fistula.
Preparation of the tissue involves releasing the gum tissue from the underlying bone and harvesting a fresh tissue flap to cover the hole.
Enough tissue must be freed to cover the defect without tension as seen here.
